Butterfly park in Thumboormuzhy  - A day with Butterflys

Thumboormuzhy Butterflypark is growing to be one of the important eco-tourism attractions in Chalakudy- Athirapally Ecotourism. A visit to Athirapally will be completed only with a visit to Thumboormuzhy. It is astonishing that Thumboormuzhy attracts more tourists than Athirapally. Tourists across the globe are visiting thumboormuzhy. Thumboormuzhy is natural habitat of various species of butterfly’s .Of course, butterfly sighting is seasonal. The lifespan of some varieties of butterfly is only four days and in some other case it is up to 40 days.It is the second butterfly park in Kerala after Themala.  .

According to Mr Manish, the destination manager, Thumboormuzhy, about 148 species of Butterflies can be seen in the park. HE confirms that early morning ,bigger butterfly similar to birds can be seen . The most common butterflies that can be seen include lemon butterfly (Papilio demoleus), southern birdwing (Troides minos), common rose (Pachliopta aristolochiae), light blue tiger (Tirumala limniace), dark blue tiger (Tirumala septentrionis).

A wide variety of plants and trees suited to various species of butterflies are in Thumboormuzy . There are many host plants that provide right leafy meal to caterpillar species and plants which the butterflies depend on for their alkaloid requirements. Plants which are grown in the park as feed for butterflies include Pagoda flower, rattlepods, Mexican heather or Hawaiin Heather, Rubiaceae, flame lily or fire lily, Heliotropium keralense (Medicinal Plant), etc. Trees in the park were mainly for canopy butterflies. The park is on the river banks, besides that water sprinklers and artificial ponds and puddles have been created to provide the humidity necessary for breeding. The water bodies would also facilitate ‘mud-puddling’, a phenomenon through which butterflies obtain their requirements of salt and amino acids from wet soil and mud.

It would be better if the Tourism department provides more facilities, so that tourists would get an insight into the lifecycle of various species of butterflies. Moreover an exhibition of the different ‘models’ of butterflies and its different life-stage is most welcome.  An interpretation centre in the park to educate the visitors on all aspects of butterflies will most important.
